Finding free or cheap things to do at Lake of the Ozarks isn’t the easiest of tasks. We have lots of amazing attractions and activities for families, couples, and groups. Most of it will require taking out your wallet. Lucky for you, we’ve put together a list of free or low cost things to do around the Lake.

Whether you’re traveling on a budget, or have prioritized your cash for extreme adventures, we get it. You’ll find plenty to do in nature, free attractions, and even some free samples at local businesses.  Enjoy!

Enjoy Nature

1. Swim and picnic all day at a Lake of the Ozarks State Park public beach.

Who can say no to a day in the sun and waist-deep water? Bring your blankets, snacks, drinks and towels and lay back while the kids do their thing.

2. Go see the castle ruins at Ha Ha Tonka.

It’s an easy walk to the remains, but the true adventure is in the extensive walking paths throughout the property. Walk down over 100 stairs and reach the beautiful shaded spring area. There’s also a water tower and carriage house to explore. You can take an afternoon or just an hour at Ha Ha Tonka depending on your schedule and desired activity levels.

3. Explore the State Park

Besides swimming, Lake of the Ozarks State park hosts all kinds of visitors, from hikers and cyclists, to those on horseback. Explore a trail and see the many different habitats that make up the Ozarks woodlands. Or bring your fishing rod to see how many different kinds of fish you can catch.

Learn Some History

1. Camden County Museum in Linn Creek

The museum has a large collection of Civil War collectibles and lots of relics from historical area businesses and homes. Self-guided tours are welcome, with an appointment required if you want a private tour. The museum hosts events like festivals and plays, so be sure to check the schedule.

2. Wilmore Lodge

Serving as the official Lake of the Ozarks Visitors Center, Wilmore Lodge is a nice stop to learn a little history about the area. There’s a wealth of information about the construction of Bagnell Dam and the communities here that preceded it. You can also pick up maps and brochures to help plan your stay here. Pack a picnic and walk through the gardens to the gazebo on the lake. You’ll have a view of the Lake you won’t forget.

3. See what started it all from the Bagnell Dam Overlook.

Visit Bagnell Dam Overlook and look down on the lake from the deck that is situated right over the dam. The view is gorgeous! Take an up-close look at an actual turbine, retired from its work creating electricity from inside the dam. Learn a little about the process of building the dam, written on the displays throughout the park. Tip: go at sunset for some Instagram-worthy photos. You can also drive to the bottom of the dam and be awed by the enormity of the structure. Kids will love the huge fish that call the Osage River home.

4. Take a short drive to Swinging Bridges and Shallows.

About a twenty minutes from Lake Ozark, down an old dirt road, is a part of Lake area history. Two swinging bridges built before the dam was, still stand. Join the brave souls who have walked or driven across the bridges, which swing and sway as you do. If you’re up for a swim, there’s a beautiful creek below. If you love a nice drive and laid-back adventures, this one is for you.

Free Samples

1. Sample moonshine, whiskey, and vodka at Ozark Distillery.

Sign up with Ozark Distillery ahead of time for a tour (at only $5/person) with the Head Distiller. Learn about the distilling process and smell the sweet scent of aging spirits.

2. Seven Springs Winery

Stop by Seven Springs Winery with the adults in your group to get 3 free samples. Take in the beautiful Ozark views and have a whole glass while you’re at it. It’s a beautiful destination.

3. Casa de Loco

Casa de Loco is another Lake of the Ozarks winery that offers free samples to its guests. With a breathtaking view and an owner who loves to share his knowledge, you won’t be disappointed.

4. Harmy's Cheese Store

Be sure to browse their local beers and wine too. The owners are super friendly and will be sure you get to try the snacks you want to. You won’t be able to go home empty-handed.

Walk the Strip

Window shoppers and people watchers will love walking in the Strip. Find the perfect souvenir at Dogpatch, get your beachwear at one of the boutiques, or stop by a restaurant for a quick beer or cocktail. Stop in at Old Time Photos for a smashingly fun photo shoot in western getup. The kids will have a blast picking out their favorites from a huge selection at Grandma’s Candy Kitchen. Then they can run wild at the nearby arcade, earning tickets for ridiculous prizes. Of course, there’s ice cream and treats galore. Check the schedule for Hot Summer Nights and bring the kids for a dance party. Even if you don’t want to spend any cash, there is plenty to see at one of the first attractions at Lake of the Ozarks.

It’s not always easy to find free things to do in an area that pulls out all the stops for tourists. Hopefully, our list has given you some awesome activities to keep you busy during your trip to Lake of the Ozarks.
